Body Mass Index (BMI) or the Quetelet Index as it is also known as, refers to the measurement of the human body based on its shape, mass and height. It provides a numeric measure of a person’s thickness/thinness allowing health professionals to discuss overweight and underweight problems more objectively with the concerned patients. It is often used as a screening tool to ascertain if your weight is likely to put you at a risk for health-related problems like heart diseases, diabetes, hormonal imbalances amongst others.
